Mattupetty – Dam(n) Amazing !
This dam was built for the sole purpose of production of hydroelectricity by the conservation of water. This dam in located near Munnar, in Idukki district and is known as a “concrete gravity dam”. These type of dams are designed to hold water just by utilizing the weight of the material alone. Resources say that the dam Mattupetty is situated at an altitude of 1700 m above sea level.
Mattupetty Lake and Dam is a beautiful picnic spot with the panoramic view of the tea plantations and the lake, that teaches about how a dam works and also the production of electricity using the stored water. Boating facilities are also available in the reservoir. Mattupetty is also well known for its highly specialized dairy farm “The Indo-Swisss Live Stock project”.
