Mahatma Gandhi Mandapam – Memorial to the Peacemaker!
Kanykumari is the place where great legends are honored(Swami Vivekananda and Thiruvalluvar) and the list continues as our Father of the nation is also honored. Yes, a memorial has been built and completed in the year 1956 to Mahatma Gandhi who had reportedly visited Kanyakumari in 1925 and in the year 1937.
Gandhi Mandapam is near the Kumari Amman Temple where the ash of Mahatma Gandhi is preserved. The Mandapam is designed in such a manner(Orissa style) that on every October 2nd(on his birthday), the rays of the sun fall on the spot where the urn is kept.
The memorial was transferred to the administrative control of the Public (Information and Public Relations) Department from Public Works Department of Government of Tamil Nadu in the year 1978.
Everyone is allowed to visit the place from 7 am till 7 pm and the entry is absolutely free.
