The name of the temple is derived from its tradition that the presiding deity of the temple wards off the effects of ‘dhrishti’, a Sanskrit (Indian language) term which may be held to mean ‘casting an evil eye’. As per the natives and locals of the locality, they say that the history of the temple dates back to 68 AD.
