There are almost sixty four Theerthams, (Theerthams are shallow waters of the sea extending upto some metres) in and around Rameshwaram. Among the others Agni Theertham is one of the most frequently visited for a holy bath.

Hindus believe that a bath in all of these Theerthams will remove their sins. Legend says that Lord Sri Ram took a bath in Agni theertham after killing Ravana and worshipped the deity here. Hence these Theerthams are considered as holy for pilgrims.

There is also a faith that childless couple after taking a bath in this Theertham will be blessed with children. The most auspicious days for bathing here are the new moon days and full moon days.
